Mozquito plague in Melbourne
You have probably noticed the increased numbers of mosquitoes around at the moment.
This is thought to be due to the unusually high rainfall in Melbourne during September to November this year. It is important to remember that mosquitoes bite your pets as well especially those outdoors at dawn and dusk. Mosquito bites can be very irritating to dogs and cats and can also spread the deadly heartworm parasite. In some cases dogs and particularly cats can have a hypersensitivity to mosquito bites, causing sores and ulcers on the nose and ears. Over the coming months it is a good idea to make sure you do not have ‘breeding grounds’ for mosquitoes in your backyard. Empty any vessels of stagnant water.
For dogs Advatix used monthly will repel mosquitoes as well as fleas and ticks. If your dog seems particularly bothered by mosquitoes you can also try an animal- specific repellant such as Muscoban (sold at front desk). Do not use human repellants containing DEET on your pets.
Cats are particularly sensitive to many repellants. Do not use any repellants or spot on treatments designed for humans or dogs on your cat as they are generally toxic to them. For cats that are bothered by mosquitoes consider keeping them indoors especially at dawn and dusk.
